Abstract
The tuberculous appendicitis being rarely encountered, its incidence ranges from 0.1 to 3 percent among all appendectomies performed in general hospital. It is characteristically pred-ominant in young adult.
Three main modes of infection should be considered: hematogenous, intestinal contents which were infected with tuberculosis, and from extension from other organs such as ileocecal or genital organs.
The primary tuberculous appendicitis is extremely rare, while the secondary one is more common in incidence. Although the diagnosis is made on basis of the past history such as a low grade of right lower abdominal pain, intermittent vomiting and diarrhea for six months or more, the operation is more often than not, performed under the impression of the ordinary pyogenic appendicitis. The latent or asymptomatic tuberculosis of the appendix can be frequ-ently found in appendices routinely resected at the time of the other abdominal operations or at necropsy.
The treatment consists of in the case of the lesion limited to the appendix, that appendectomy with the penicillin and sreptomycin injections for a week, and in the case of the primary focus present anywhere, the appendectomy followed by the antituberculous therapy for six mon-ths or more in the identical manner of other tuberculous management.
